What happens if you withdraw early from a bonus offer
The single most expensive mistake in bonus hunting, why the rules are written the way they are, and how to avoid losing money you had already earned.
Almost every offer that asks you to deposit money also asks you to leave it there. The hold period is usually stated plainly, 30 days, 90 days, twelve months. And the consequence of breaking it is almost always the same: you forfeit the entire bonus, not a proportion of it.
Why it is all-or-nothing
From the provider's side the hold period is the whole point of the offer. They are not paying you for the deposit; they are paying you for the commitment. A partial forfeit would let someone take most of the reward for a fraction of the commitment, so the terms are written as a cliff rather than a slope.
This also means there is rarely a grace period. Withdrawing on day 29 of a 30-day hold generally costs you the same as withdrawing on day one.
The version people get wrong
The hold usually runs from when the money arrives, not from when you opened the account. If you opened on the 1st and the transfer landed on the 8th, a 30-day hold ends on the 8th of the following month. Reading it the other way is the most common way people miss by a week.
Two further traps appear in real terms:
- Some offers require the balance to stay above a threshold, not merely that you do not withdraw the original deposit. Spending from the account can breach it.
- Where the bonus is a free share rather than cash, the share itself is often locked separately, sometimes for longer than the deposit.
How to not lose it
Write down the unlock date the day the money lands, not the day you sign up. And put it somewhere you will actually look. People on forums do this with calendar reminders, which works right up until they are running four offers at once.
